Tom Hiddleston won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture for TV for The Night Manger. In his speech, the Loki actor spoke about his experience in South Sudan. Social media users took notice at some the reactions in the audience to his acceptance speech. However, some people on social media did not take to his story and felt it was a bit too self-serving while others appreciated bringing awareness to such a serious issue.

The biggest insult of that speech was no love for Taylor Swift. Nothing? Come on!

Based on John le Carré’s novel of the same name, “The Night Manager” is a crime drama following the work of former British soldier Jonathan Pine. Hotel night porter Pine is contacted by an intelligence operative who asks for his assistance to spy on international businessman Richard Roper. The entrepreneur is believed to have forged a criminal alliance between the secret arms trade and the intelligence community, prompting the need for surveillance. Pine attempts to infiltrate Roper’s inner circle by becoming a felon himself, while keeping his mission a secret from his hotel colleagues and girlfriend.

Jessica Jones is already an empowering female show but now it is taking it a step further. The show’s executive producer Melissa Rosenberg announced that all 13 episodes of Season 2 of the Netflix series will be directed entirely by women.

Rosenberg, who wrote the Twilight movies, spoke about this choice at a panel on “Diversifying Entertainment” at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, according to Variety.

Rosenberg revealed that at first she had only planned to increase the number of female directors involved in Season 2, but when she discussed hiring female directors first with her production staff, an unnamed colleague suggested hiring exclusively women to direct. This is great news as women directors are not represented as well as their male counterparts.

Production company Marvel was completely supportive and the mandate was set for the female-led series, which stars Krysten Ritter, to be framed from a woman’s point of view, according to TV Guide. The show does dive into dark themes, including mind control and sexual coercion, leading many critics to read the series as a metaphor for surviving and breaking the cycle of sexual abuse.

Netflix has not yet announced a premiere date for Season 2 of Jessica Jones.

Here are some reactions from social media.

According to the Collider, the move puts Jessica Jones in the same conversation as Ava DuVernay‘s Queen Sugar, the OWN drama that also featured an all-female directing roster in its debut season. Unfortunately, no details about the directors themselves have been revealed and neither has any information about the superheroine’s second season been released. Rosenberg did say that scripts were nearing completion in anticipation of the start of shooting, which is set for next year.

Jessica Campbell Jones Cage is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos, and she first appeared in Alias #1, a Max imprint.

What do you think of the decision to have all female directors for Jessica Jones? Certainly, other series have had only male directors. Are you excited for the new season on Netflix? Sound off below in the comments section.
